Starting in October 2010 Lufthansa started to fly nonstop from Frankfurt to Bogotá five times a week. Iberia will increase its frequency to 2 daily flights from Madrid and Bogotá will become the third most important long haul destination for the Spanish carrier who expects a 12% passenger increase this year.

Tony Ryan, son of the Ryan Air founder, initiated the low cost carrier Viva Colombia, and plans five domestic destinations from Bogotá: Cartagena, the pearl of the Caribbean; the salsa-capital Cali; Medellin, city of eternal spring; Barranquilla, birthplace of Shakira; and Bucaramanga the capital of Santander. The new ariline will primarily compete with Aires and plans to sell tickets for as little as 16 USD.
