Day 2

We take a walk to discover the contrast between the modern and historic parts of Bogotá. We stroll through the lively aisles of the Paloquemao Market, where vendors offer fresh produce from the surrounding region. We sample a delicious fresh fruit juice and admire the vibrant colors of the open-air flower market.

We then explore the historic district of La Candelaria, whose colorful colonial houses and winding streets capture the charm of Bogotá’s old town. Around Plaza de Bolívar, important landmarks such as the Cathedral, the Palace of Justice, the Capitol, and City Hall form the political and historic heart of the city.

Afterwards, we visit the Botero Museum, featuring works by the renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero, as well as an impressive collection of international masters such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Claude Monet.

At the Gold Museum, one of the world’s most important collections of pre-Columbian gold artifacts awaits us, offering fascinating insights into the history and culture of Colombia’s Indigenous peoples.

Weather permitting, we round off the day with a visit to the Monserrate viewpoint, where you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views over the sprawling metropolis of Bogotá.

Day 3

We leave the capital and head north to visit Guatavita Lagoon, which we already learned about during our visit to the Gold Museum.

Located 75 km northeast of Bogotá, Guatavita Lagoon is a perfectly circular body of water surrounded by mountains covered in páramo vegetation. Situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters above sea level, it enjoys a cool climate and has a truly magical atmosphere. The lagoon is famous for its connection to the legendary story of El Dorado.

The trail to the lagoon follows an ecological path offering spectacular views, with several stops along the way where the history, ecology, and cultural significance of this remarkable site are explained.

Day 4

From our hotel in Villa de Leyva, we set off on a hike along the old mule trail leading to Chíquiza. Along the way, you will be captivated by the striking landscape of the Cárcavas, where yellow-hued earth and rock formations patiently sculpted by erosion create a scene that feels almost otherworldly.

Accompanied by an experienced guide, we explore this fascinating ecosystem, characterized by xerophytic vegetation, maguey plants, and other desert flora.

The trail offers beautiful panoramic views of the wild yet tranquil beauty of the Zaquencipá Valley — a unique contrast between the power of nature and the peacefulness of the surrounding landscape.

Day 5

Today, our driver will pick us up at the hotel as we continue our journey towards Barichara, a considerably warmer region. The route initially takes us through lush green pastures and then along an impressive canyon towards the Suárez River. Along the way, we have the opportunity to make several stops to visit a traditional sugarcane mill (trapiche), sample local guava specialties, or taste the regional delicacy cuajada con melao — fresh cheese served with sugarcane syrup. We arrive in Barichara, situated at approximately 1,300 meters above sea level. The rest of the day is free to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the cobblestone streets and admire the exceptionally well-preserved colonial architecture of this picturesque town, often considered one of the most beautiful villages in Colombia. Transfer from Villa de Leyva to Barichara.

Day 6

Accompanied by our guide, we hike along a historic royal road of pre-Columbian and colonial origin, which was expanded and used for regional trade in the 19th century by the German engineer Geo von Lengerke. The route is approximately 6 km long and is mostly downhill, descending from around 1,340 meters above sea level in Barichara to approximately 1,000 meters in Guane. Depending on walking pace, the hike takes around two hours. The trail consists largely of historic stone paving, with uneven steps, loose stones, and some dusty sections. Sturdy footwear with good traction is therefore recommended. As there is little shade along the route, you should also bring a sun hat, sunscreen, and plenty of drinking water. The continuous descent can put some strain on the knees, so a reasonable level of fitness and surefootedness are recommended. Along the way, we enjoy spectacular views of the Suárez Canyon and the surrounding countryside, with its fields, dry-stone walls, and traditional regional architecture. Upon arrival in Guane, we have time to explore the main square, visit the colonial church and archaeological museum, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere of this charming village. We return to Barichara by tuk-tuk. After our visit to Guane, we continue to Finca San Pedro, where Katja and Jorge warmly welcome us to their property. Look forward to a delicious lunch and inspiring conversations.

Day 7

Early in the morning, we set off on an approximately 1.5-hour hike through the peaceful landscapes surrounding Barichara. The trail takes us past gentle hills, open fields, and shady stretches. We arrive at Café Alfanía, where we are warmly welcomed by the coffee farmers. As we stroll through the plantations beneath the shade of native trees, we learn about the entire coffee-making process — from the plant to the bean — and discover the traditional techniques that give this coffee its distinctive character. We conclude with a delightful moment at the main house of the finca. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air as we enjoy a cup of locally grown coffee accompanied by a traditional brunch of tamales, chorizo, and arepas.

After breakfast, we say goodbye to Barichara and travel through the diverse landscapes of Santander to Bucaramanga. From there, we fly via Bogotá to Santa Marta. Upon arrival, our journey continues along the Caribbean coast to Palomino. With every kilometer, we leave everyday life further behind. Rising majestically before us is the impressive Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the highest coastal mountain range in the world. At the German-run Finca Escondida Hotel, your yoga retreat begins. Nestled between tropical nature and the sea, this is a place of peace and relaxation. In the afternoon, the retreat begins with a gentle yoga session designed to help you settle in. Breathing exercises, mobilization, and flowing movements allow you to leave the journey behind and fully arrive in this special setting. After the first yoga session, we round off the day with a shared dinner overlooking the sea. We enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and, together with yoga teacher Kristin, prepare for the wonderful days ahead.
