If there is one thing we can tell for sure – it’s that Colombians really know how to party! Really matching this is the slogan of the world famous Carnival of Barranquilla “Who lives it, enjoys it” (Quien lo vive es quien lo goza). For four days in February everything in Colombia’s Caribbean city Barranquilla is about street parties, parades and celebrations of traditional music.
Carnival of Barranquilla is the second largest carnival party of the world, only Carnival of Rio is bigger. The advantage over Rio? There are less foreign tourists in Barranquilla, so you might stand out as a “gringo” and therefore make a lot of new friends and be asked for a dance 😉 It is a melting pot of cultural influences. Where European, African and indigenous people live and celebrate together there is a variety of music, dances and costumes.
That’s why in 2003, Carnival of Barranquilla was proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
