My first thought about wildlife in Colombia and visiting the Llanos was about the long distances to get there. But this turned out not to be a problem. An hour flight from Bogotá and then one and a half to four hours drive, depending on the Lodge. And after arrival it was clear that it was well worth the trip. A fascinating mix of wild west style Cowboy lifestyle and Safari. And of course, no way to skip the horseback riding. Initial skepticism was overcome after the crossing of the river went smoothly. Watching the crocodiles and capybaras from the perspective of a cowboy is definitely an unforgettable experience. Back to the lodge enjoying a cool drink and sitting in a different position than in the saddle is very welcome. The next excursion in the late afternoon is on foot and the focus lies more on monkey and birds. Incredible how many different birds can be seen; the Llanos in Colombia are a birdwatching paradise. Dinner and a lesson in cultura llanera with Joropo dancing lessons included is the last hurdle before the well-earned sleep.
Two or three days are ideal to experience the breadth of wildlife landscape and incredibly friendly llaneros. And on the way back I forgot about the distance because I had so many memories about the wildlife in Colombia to review. Click here to see more photos and itineraries.
